Biography

I was born in Rustavi, where I began teaching calligraphy in 2010 while still in school, and I have never stopped doing so since. Teaching also implies continuous learning: the study and research of traditional calligraphy is an integral part of my daily life.

Alongside calligraphy, I chose to pursue a career in law. Today, I am a legal scholar and lecturer at the university. For me, these two fields are inseparable: the modern Mkhedruli script was created precisely by lawyers and royal scribes to transcribe royal documents. Therefore, I study old Georgian documents from two perspectives—as legal texts and as calligraphic manuscripts. The results of this research have been presented at the universities of Venice, Tokyo, Hamburg, and Frankfurt.

For me, as a calligrapher, the primary task is the interpretation of the text. The works of different authors demand different forms of expression, so I try to convey the character of each text, or my attitude towards it, through the strokes of my pen. Typography and type design are a natural continuation of this constant search for novelty. To date, I have created around three hundred Georgian typefaces. Although the reed pen of the monks working in medieval scriptoriums has been replaced by graphic software, the goal remains unchanged: to find simpler, more beautiful, and more practical letterforms.

My calligraphic works have been exhibited at various times in Georgia and abroad—in Italy, Germany, Egypt, Romania, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.

I attach great importance to educational activities: since 2011, my family and I have been organizing the "Kvemo Kartli Calligraphy Competition". This project not only develops the culture of writing but also brings together and unites young people in a diverse region. I am particularly proud of founding the Georgian Calligraphers Association in 2022 alongside a team of like-minded colleagues. I believe that, grounded in tradition, our joint efforts are creating an entirely new future for Georgian calligraphy.

On September 27, a calligraphic performance titled 'Abkhazia – Truth Revealed by the Pen' was held, organized by the Georgian Calligraphers Association and supported by Factory Tbilisi.

Nearly 20 calligraphers, including David Maisuradze, created calligraphic renditions of around 100 Abkhazian toponyms specifically for this day—cities, villages, and towns almost forgotten in our daily lives, brought back to memory through the calligrapher's pen...

The main message of the two-component project was – „ჰარა ჰაიბარხჷნჰჿუეიტ“ (in Abkhaz), 'we will win each other back'—a phrase rendered in calligraphy by calligrapher David Maisuradze during the performance.

It is also worth noting that the attending guests themselves became participants in the performance and joined in its central message!
